Comparative Cases and Their Lessons for China

Most China-watchers have limited awareness of comparative cases.

Other extant Communist regimes (Laos, Vietnam, North Korea, and Cuba), past Communist regimes (including the Soviet Union and its client states), and authoritarian regimes with varying points of commonality with China (such as past Northeast Asian authoritarian regimes and past members of the so-called Communist penumbra) provide valuable lessons on state-society relations, regime durability, and political evolution in countries like modern China.

This initiative engages with experts on comparative cases to provide relevant and accessible insights for the China-watching community. Through interviews, interdisciplinary panel discussions, and original analysis, it demonstrates that comparison provides a valuable framework for understanding potential future political, economic, and social developments in China.
